Mirra Andreeva’s remarkable 2023 continues unabated, as the 16-year-old Russian, who was outside the Top-300 in April, makes her Top-50 debut this week.
It has been a steep, steady climb by the former junior No.1 this season. After reaching the girls’ singles final at the Australian Open, she tried her hand at the pro level and reached the round of 16 at Madrid and the third round at Roland-Garros (after qualifying for the main draw).
At Wimbledon the explosion continued as Andreeva powered into the round of 16 (after qualifying) before falling to Madison Keys in three sets.
Andreeva made her Top-100 debut after that sterling performance in London, and later reached the second round at the US Open before falling to eventual champion Coco Gauff.
Continuing the good times, Andreeva powered to the round of 16 at Beijing last week (again, after qualifying) before falling to Elena Rybakina in three sets.
This week Andreeva makes her Top-50 debut at No.50 (+10) – by far the youngest player inside the WTA’s Top-100.
Andreeva is one of seven teenagers currently inside the WTA’s Top-100. Five of the other six were born in 2004, with Linda Fruhvirtova born in 2005, while Andreeva was born in 2007. She will turn 17 next April.
Teenagers currently inside the WTA’s Top 100:
No.3 Coco Gauff, age 19
No.40 Linda Noskova, age 18
No.50 Mirra Andreeva, age 16
No. 66 Diana Shnaider, age 19
No.80 Ashlyn Krueger, age 19
No. 88 Linda Fruhvirtova, age 18
Ostapenko, Samsonova rising
Luidmila Samsonova, who reached the final at Beijing, rose six spots to No.16, while Jelena Ostapenko, a quarterfinalist in Beijing, jumps four spots to No.13. Along with Daria Kasatkina (+1 to No.12), the pair were the only two that moved up inside the Top-20 this week. .
