Roger Federer won’t be at the Swiss Indoor Basel next week – the Swiss declined to take part in another farewell, saying it was too soon after his recent goodbye at the Laver Cup – but he will appear in Tokyo in November.
“I have been trying to absorb everything that took place recently and celebrating at home in Basel will have a very special meaning and comes to soon after London,” Federer said of missing out on Basel. “I have so many incredible memories from playing so many years at home and my wish is that the tournament continues to be one of the top stops on the ATP Tour.”
Federer will, however, return to the court in November for a Uniqlo-sponsored event in Tokyo, Japan, and he'll have a racquet in hand for some of the event.
Federer will take part in “Uniqlo Life Wear Day,” which will take place on 19 November 2022 at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, the venue that usually hosts the ATP 500 tournament in October.
Some details on the event from Uniqlo:
Federer will be joined at the event by fellow UNIQLO Global Brand Ambassador and wheelchair tennis champion Shingo Kunieda. As part of the program, Roger and Shingo Kunieda will host a junior tennis coaching and mentoring session for selected students from the first through fourth grades of elementary school. Under the leadership of the Japan Tennis Association, these sessions will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for juniors to meet and learn from these two tennis greats in a fun and enjoyable session. The sessions will develop kids' on-court skills and emphasize other important life skills associated with being a professional sportsperson. Through LifeWear Day Tokyo 2022, UNIQLO aims to inspire young people, helping prepare them to become tomorrow's leaders.
Federer is also scheduled to play tennis in a separate session with Kunieda.
