Elina Svitolina arrived at the WTA finals armed with a Tour-best five tournament titles.
The savvy baseliner blames brain-cramping for her winless start in Singapore.

"So probably when I finish the tournament I will have questions for my team and questions for myself, of course, what I did wrong," Svitolina said following her 6-7 (7), 6-3, 7-5, loss to Caroline Garcia today. "Because this kind of matches I played they were like really terrible tennis from me."
Svitolina, who fell to former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, 6-2, 6-0, in her opener, dropped to 0-2 in Red Group play.
"Okay the girls played really, really good, but the way I handled the situation in the tournament was completely brainless—seriously," said Svitolina, who owned a Tour-best 10-3 record vs. Top 10 opponents, but has now dropped two in a row.
The first Ukrainian woman to qualify for the year-end event still has a slim shot at the semifinals though she'd have to sweep world No. 1 Simona Halep in her final round-robin singles match then hope for a favorable result in the Wozniacki vs. Garcia match to do it.
Svitolina isn't counting on it.
"I wish I had no chance to qualify," Svitolina said. "I try to recover and try my best, but I don't know. I was expecting better tennis. I don’t have any expectations anymore."
