Rafael Nadal will look to lock down the year-end No.1 ranking at Paris, while Roger Federer will continue his quest to catch him. Will the duo square off in another big-ticket final next weekend at Bercy?
The draw has been released and the qualifiers have been placed. Nadal will open with either Hyeon Chung or Mischa Zverev after his first-round bye. Federer will face either Feliciano Lopez or Pierre-Hugues Herbert after his bye.
If the seeds hold, the quarterfinals at the 48-player draw will play out as follows.
[1] Nadal vs. [8] Carreno Busta
[4] Zverev vs. [6] Dimitrov
[7] Goffin vs. [3] Cilic
[2] Federer vs. [5] Thiem
Nadal has only played the Paris Masters twice since 2009. He was runner-up in 2007, and reached the semis in 2009 and 2013. 2011 champion Federer has reached the semis on three occasions.
Other key matchups pit No.13-seeded Juan Martin del Potro against Alexander Zverev in the round of 16 (Del Potro faces Lorenzi or Sousa after his bye), and No.11-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against David Goffin in the round of 16 (Tsonga will face either Julien Benneteau or Denis Shapovalov in the second round after his bye).
No.12-seeded Kevin Anderson will face either Andrey Rublev or Fernando Verdsco after a bye; No. 10-seeded Sam Querrey will face either Filip Krajinovic or Yuichi Sugita after a bye. Both Querrey and Anderson have a chance to qualify for London this week, along with Tsonga, Del Potro and David Goffin.
