There’s nothing like going out on top.
Don’t know what we’re talking about? Ask Martina Hingis.
The Swiss miss, who announced that she’ll retire from tennis for the third time after this year’s WTA Finals, will finish the season as the WTA’s co No.1 doubles player.
Hingis and her partner, Chan Yung-Jan of Chinese Tapei, assured the year-end No.1 ranking with their 6-3, 6-2 win over Ana-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke.
They will become the fifth pair to share the No.1 ranking in WTA history, joining Lisa Raymond/Samantha Stosur (2006), Cara Black/Liezel Huber (2007-09), Sara Errani/Roberta Vinci (2013-14) and Hingis/Sania Mirza (2015).
In their first year as a tandem, Hingis and Chan have claimed nine titles including the U.S. Open. They will face Timea Babos and Andrea Hlavackova in the WTA Finals last four on Saturday.
