Roger Federer hopes to have a distinct advantage over the rest of the ATP at this week’s Shanghai Masters and for the rest of the season.

The 36-year-old says he feels completely fresh heading into his last four events of the season, and he believes that it is due to the nine-week rest he took after completing the Indian Wells-Miami double.

“I think taking nine weeks off during the clay court season—it was not something I had planned, it only came by me winning Australia, Indian Wells and Miami—that gave me that opportunity to take it easy and save myself for the rest of the season so I hope actually that I will feel the benefit,” he said. “While other guys are getting are maybe getting a bit tired, I’m actually still fresh in a sense. I didn’t play that much this season, I’m usually someone who is playing 70 to 90 to 100 matches in a season. This year that’s not the case and that’s why I feel quite refreshed here for Shanghai and then hopefully Basel, Paris and London.”

Federer, who enters Shanghai with a 39-4 record and five titles on the season, said he isn’t sure how he will schedule next season.

“Next year I’m not quite sure what the schedule is going to exactly be like,” he said. “I still have to finish this season first, get through the preparation well, then obviously start in Australia and then after Australia I’ll really make the plan about how the season is going to go from February on.”

Federer begins his bid for a second Shanghai Masters title with a second-round match against Diego Schwartzman on Wednesday.
