Alexander Zverev Will Not Play Milan

As expected, news has come down today that Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from the #NextGenATP Finals in Milan, Italy. The event, which features the top seven ranked 21-and-under players plus a wild card to be determined made the announcement today.

The tournament announced that Hyeon Chung and Daniil Medvedev had qualified as a result of Zverev’s withdrawal.

It’s tough news for the event to lose its marquee player, but Zverev has outgrown this event—the German is currently ranked No.5 in the ATP and he’s claimed five titles this season, including two at the Masters 1000 level.

Zverev has already qualified for this year’s ATP World Tour Finals in London and he’s currently playing Vienna and scheduled to play Paris next week. That’s a lot of tennis, even for a 20-year-old.

He’ll be well served by skipping Milan and letting the rest of the tour’s rising stars fight for the title at the inaugural event.
