Juan Martin del Potro took to Facebook to pen a heartfelt letter to fans for helping him enjoy what he calls the best year of his career.

The Tower of Tandil won 30 matches, including the Olympic Silver medal and the title in Stockholm, but he has elected to skip next week’s Paris Masters in order to rest and prepare for the Davis Cup final.

“My year on the ATP Tour has just finished and it had a very special moment, the best week of my life: the Olympic Games in Rio,” Del Potro posted on Facebook. “That night after the medal ceremony I did not want to leave the stadium. I wanted that moment to last forever.”

Del Potro went 5-4 against the Top 10 and kick-started his season with his first Top 5 win of the season (and since 2013) against Stan Wawrinka at Wimbledon. That turned out to be just the beginning. Though he played his backhand cautiously all season, focusing on staying healthy rather than pushing his limits, Del Potro did play more and more as the season progressed. He created the emotional high point of the season when he defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the Olympics and reached the Gold Medal match.

From there he made his first appearance at the U.S. Open in three years, reaching the quarterfinals.

“I will not forget the US Open, the weekend in Glasgow, also Wimbledon ... When I started my comeback in February at Delray Beach and I was frustrated because my backhand landed short, which still happens, I never imagined I would finish my ATP season with these achievements. This was a recovery season from start to finish. With the help of my physiotherapists and thanks to a wise calendar, I was able to surprise everyone, including myself, and I ended up winning the title in Stockholm. I played a lot more than what my doctors suggested and that was why you may have noticed fatigue.”

Del Potro will join his team in Zagreb, Croatia this November, to contest the Davis Cup final. Argentina has been to the final four times but never won the title.
