Borna Coric of Croatia made the most of his wild card into the Swiss Indoors Basel by taking out 6th-seeded Ernests Gulbis for his first top 20 win, 7-6(2), 6-3.

The Croatian, who won his maiden Grand Slam match this summer when he defeated Lukas Rosol at the US Open, was also a quarterfinalist on home soil in Umag this July. At that tournament he became the second-youngest quarterfinalist in Umag history, and the youngest since Rafael Nadal in 2003.

Today Coric took advantage of an uninspired performance by Gulbis, earning 14 break points against the Latvian and converting three en route to his fifth tour-level victory of the season.

Coric will face Andrey Golubev in the second round in Basel, and could face Nadal in the quarterfinals.
