Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Former world No. 1 Justine Henin will return to competition on December 9 for an exhibition tournament in Antwerp. The Belgian seven-time Grand Slam winner has struggled with an elbow injury since June of last year when she fell at Wimbledon.

Be sure to watch for her backhand lob. Henin prepares for her one-handed backhand lob without her preparation indicating that she will be hitting this signature shot of her's. She gets behind the ball and positions herself so it appears that she is hitting a normal passing shot.

Her left hand holds the racket at the throat helping her shoulder turn. Henin then drops her racket under the ball with her left hand just now coming off the throat. She uses an extreme grip: her right hand is very far around the handle. Henin's tennis racket drops very low and it is only then that you know that she is hitting a lob.

She brings up her racket speedily to brush behind the ball. Henin's swing is sharply vertical and her arm is rotated to get the amount of topspin she desires. The combination of her sharply vertical swing and extended hitting arm causes the momentum that executes this beautiful shot.
