Kudos to Andy Murray for handling this post-match interview with grace, accepting full responsibility for what was no doubt a deflating and disappointing loss, and for giving high and fair praise to Roger Federer in his assessment of his opponent’s performance.

Notes, Numbers, Tweets: Federer Shellacks Murray, Wins Group B

Murray was on the short end of a 6-0, 6-1 drubbing on Thursday in London, one of the worst defeats he’s ever suffered, and on home soil no less, but he handled himself with typical class in the aftermath.

“He played exceptionally well, that’s for sure,” said Murray. “I can say I’m disappointed with my level tonight, but if I played well he probably still would have won … After the first few games of the match he played exceptionally well, made very few mistakes and was hitting the ball in the middle of the racquet…”

Murray said he isn’t sure what the loss will do to his confidence, but he is sure that he’s got work to do. “It’s not a nice way to finish the year,” said Murray. “In that respect I know I’m going to put a lot of work in on the tennis court, a lot of work in on my game if I want to start the season with an opportunity to win in Australia.”
