After parting ways with Wim Fissette in early November, world No. 3 Simona Halep has settled on a coach from her home country of Romania.
According to Courtney Nguyen of SI, Halep hired Victor Ionita as her coach, as well as bringing on Tommy Hogstedt as her advisor for the first three events of 2015.
Ionita, who coached Romanian Sorana Cirstea to a career-high ranking of 21 in the world in 2014, is a former world No. 187 whose last ATP match came in 2011. The 31-year-old turned pro in 2000 and earned one challenger title.
Hogstedt worked with Maria Sharapova from 2010 to 2013 before briefly working with Caroline Wozniacki and Sloane Stephens. He also spent time with Li Na.
Halep’s decision was confirmed by her agent Virgina Ruzici, according to Nguyen. The Romanian is set to begin the season in Shenzhen on Janaury 4. IN the meantime, she is soaking up the winter wonderland at home in Romania.
