Li Na has made the decision to take herself off of the WTA rankings, and the changes took effect on Monday.
Li had the option of letting her ranking fall of naturally, but her removal has implications for a whole host of WTA players; although the year-end rankings were final last week, there have been some changes. Dominika Cibulkova, who Li defeated to win the Australian Open in January, matches her career high and returns to the top 10. U.S. Open semifinalist Ekaterina Makarova also matches a career high in moving up to No. 11, while Garbine Muguruza can now say she's a top 20 player. She's the seventh Spaniard to accomplish that in the history of the WTA.
Three players in the top 30 hit new career highs as a result: Karolina Pliskova (No. 23), Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, (No. 25), and Elina Svitolina (No. 28). Zahlavova Strycova beat Li in the third round of Wimbledon, in what became the last match of her career.
In addition, US Open darling Aleksandra Krunic gets the benefit of return to the first page of the rankings, at No. 100.
