Spain's Nuria Llagostera Vives, the No. 40 doubles player in the world, has been suspended for two years by the ITF for testing positive for methamphetamine at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford.
Llagostera Vives is 33 years old and has won 16 doubles titles in her career, along with two in singles. She has denied the positive result and said that she visited San Francisco the day before but only consumed a bottle of water. Only after being informed of the findings did Llagostera Vives tell the ITF that she had also taken supplements and over-the-counter medication.
The ITF's expert witness, Christiane Ayotte, negated Llagostera Vives' claims, stating that the substance "was and is available only as a street drug (crystal meth or meth) or as a stimulant or as a party drug."
The suspension lasts until Sept. 7, 2015. Llagostera Vives is able to keep the prize money she won this year, including the five tournaments since the positive test, one of those is the US Open in which she and and Liezel Huber reached the fourth round.
