Sebastian Korda has a message for the cluster of fans that harassed him over the course of his 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-4 win over Italy’s Flavio Cobolli on Friday: It’s all good.
The American took to Twitter to give a shout out to the ornery fans after his two hour and 43-minute triumph, saying: “Shoutout to the fans behind me for talking inappropriately about my girlfriend, family and team for 2.5hrs. Thank you for the extra motivation – still love y’all!”
27th-ranked Korda picked up his first career win in Rome, in his third appearance, and will face Taylor Fritz in the third round.
Fritz took out another Italian, Fabio Fognini, 6-3, 6-4.
American Ben Shelton also advanced into round three on Friday, defeating Pavel Kotov, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Marcos Giron (v Rublev) and Tommy Paul (v Karatsev) will contest their second-round matches on Saturday, as the American men try to place five into the round of 32 at the Foro Italico.
