Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

We know who the undisputed favorite is on the women’s side at Roland Garros (that would be Iga Swiatek - she of the 29-match winning streak). But after two days of seed carnage on the lower half of the women’s singles draw, it’s getting harder and harder to predict who might reach the final.

No.14 seeded Belinda Bencic is now the highest-ranked player remaining in the lower half, after No.2 seeded Barbora Krejcikova, No.4-seeed Maria Sakkari and No.6-seeded Ons Jabeur were all knocked out early.

It doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of talent remaining among the 16 lower half participants to have reached the third round. Three-time Grand Slam Angelique Kerber, two-time Slam champ Victoria Azarenka and 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens are among the group.

There is also Bencic, the Tokyo Olympic Gold Medalist, as well as Leylah Fernandez, last year’s US Open runner-up, and Amanda Anisimova, a Roland-Garros semifinalist in 2019.

It should be interesting to see who gets through. Tune in on Friday when the lower half is back in action…
