Former world No. 1 Osaka withdrew from this week's Rome 1000 due to the left Achilles injury she sustained in Madrid last week.

"The injury I contracted last week in Madrid is still not healed. It affects the Achilles tendon so I have to be very careful, especially in the perspective of Roland-Garros," Osaka said in a statement. "I love Rome and I've always loved playing in front of the Italian fans and I'm sorry for that missed appointment. But I hope to be back next year."
Four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka fell to Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-3, 6-1 in the Madrid second round last week.
A year ago, Osaka lost to Jessica Pegula in her Rome opener.
The 38th-ranked Osaka has posted a 12-4 record in 2022.
