Angelique Kerber claimed her fourth career clay title at Strasbourg, and will make a joyous trip to Paris to take her place in the Roland-Garros main draw.
The German edged Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan, 7-6(5), 6-7(0), 7-6(5), to claim her 14th career title.
The German is seeded 21 at Roland Garros and will take on Magdalena Frech of Poland in the first round. Kerber owns a 17-14 lifetime record at the only Grand Slam event she has yet to win.
Ruud Rises in Geneva
Casper Ruud edged Portugal’s Joao Sousa, 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(1), to claim his eighth career title in Geneva.
Ruud rallied from a break (4-5) down in the third set to claim his second title at Geneva.
Ruud will square off with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in first-round action at Roland-Garros, where he is the No.8 seed. The Norwegian owns a 7-4 lifetime record at Roland-Garros, and has reached the third round in his last three appearances.
Ruud is 89-35 lifetime on clay.
Norrie wins Lyon, Trevisan wins Morocco
Cameron Norrie defeated Slovakian Alex Molcan for his first clay title in Lyon, 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-1. The British No.1 now owns four career titles.
Seeded 10th in Paris, Norrie will face Manuel Guinard, a French wild card, in round one.
Norrie is 3-4 lifetime in Roland-Garros – he reached the third round last year.
Martina Trevisan took the Morocco title, defeating American Claire Liu, 6-2, 6-1. The Italian 28-year-old is the WTA’s second first-time champion of 2022, joining Russia’s Anastasia Potapova.
