Watch: Nadal on Key to Comebacks

Rafael Nadal knows all about the art of the comeback.

The second-ranked Spaniard topped world No. 1 Novak Djokovic capturing his ninth Rome title on Sunday in his latest rousing spring revival after a litany of injury limited him to nine tournaments last season.

The king of clay has been written off more than the Game of Thrones final episode, but continues to excel.

How does he do it?

The 32-year-old Spaniard said mental strength, positive spirit and a commitment to working hard during times of struggle are all essential elements to his comebacks.

"You work mentally when you go on court every day and you don't complain when you play bad, when you have problems, when you have pains," Nadal said. "You put the right attitude, the right face, you are not negative about all the issues that happen if I'm playing bad, if I have physical problems."

The 11-time Roland Garros champion said practicing with passion is a source of strength.

"You go on court every day with the passion to keep practicing," Nadal said. "That's the mental work. That's something I did during all my career
not being frustrated when things are not going well—not being too negative and that's why I had the chance to always be back."
