The 52nd-ranked Russian, who is projected to rise to the Top 40 with her quarterfinal run, said she expects more from herself.
"I look at these types of matches, I see a lot of things I should be better at, I should improve at," Sharapova told the media in Madrid. "I think it's a combination of, yes, taking the positives, but also being a little tough on yourself and expecting a little bit more from yourself."
Once one of the premier three-set players in the sport, Sharapova dropped to 1-4 in three-set matches this season.
The 31-year-old Sharapova would have risen to No. 31 had she won today, which would have put her in line for a Roland Garros seeding. Sharapova, whose record fell to 8-6 on the season, is looking to reset ahead of her Rome return next week.
"You can't keep giving yourself a pat on the back," Sharapova said. "It was great to get those wins against those few players. But there's a reason I came up short today.
"I go back to the drawing board and start over again."
