Video: Nadal Says He's "Obviously" Not as Good as in the Past
Rafael Nadal
admitted that, at the moment, he is not as good on the court as he once was. The Spanish star spoke to the press before this week's Italian Open and talked about his recent setbacks this season.
ATP:
Nadal Falls Outside Top Five For First Time in a Decade
“Obviously today I’m not as good as I (was),” Nadal said per the AP. “Life has been fantastic with me. Today I’m not winning as much as I did in the past. Life continues.”
After losing in the Madrid Open final to
Andy Murray,
the former World No. 1 found himself falling outside the top five in the ATP rankings for the first time since 2005.
Now at No. 7, Nadal chose not to look at it as a negative.
“You are wrong if you think that the last week was a negative week for me,” Nadal said. “Last week was a positive week for the confidence and a lot of things. Let’s see if this week I can improve (on) last week.”
Having only won one title this season, Nadal shot down speculation that he might soon part ways with his long-time coach and uncle Toni Nadal. He was seen practicing on an outside court at the Rome tournament with his uncle on Tuesday.
“If things are not going well it’s because I am not playing well,” Nadal said. “Not because of the coach.”
“I don’t know if I will be with my uncle until I finish my career because I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Nadal added. “I cannot predict what will happen tomorrow. But I’m not thinking about changing my coach today.”
Nadal, the reigning French Open champion, will go in search of a record 10th title at the Paris based Grand Slam event later this month.
