Rafael Nadal is Wearing a Ridiculously Cool and Expensive Timepiece at Roland Garros

Rafael Nadal—he of the superhuman tennis game that is a revolution unto itself—now has the perfect wristwatch to match. Forbes reports that the Spaniard’s new Richard Mille RM 27-02 is worth close to $800,000 and is built to withstand forces of up to 5,000 Gs.

Why is it so expensive? Because it’s made to exacting specifications for a professional athlete to wear while he plays. Not just any professional athlete, a player who plays the game like he’s a Tasmanian Devil that has been set on fire. And a ton of research and development goes into it. Reportedly, Nadal broke six watches when he first started testing prototypes from Richard Mille in 2010.

“We have a limited production," Mille said, according to Forbes. "When you divide all those developments by the number of pieces we produce, you come out with a very high cost. And this is why we are considered the Formula 1 of the watch business, because in Formula 1 you have exactly the same sort of situation: you develop all the time and you release only a few units. But this is what we love to do.”
