The Spanish star received an honorary doctoral degree on Monday from the European University of Madrid.

Nadal, in town for this week's Madrid Open, was given the honor by university officials in a ceremony that featured him being decorated with traditional academic garb including a special hat.

Per the Daily Mail UK, Nadal was also awarded the "Working Medal of Honor’ by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy at La Moncloa Palace.

Nadal enters as defending champion of the Madrid Open despite a turbulent season that has seen him win only one title. He'll begin this year's event versus American Steve Johnson later in the week.
