Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

At first it was just a picture (an instant classic if we do say so ourselves):

Now it’s a video (instant classic, oh yeah). :50 seconds of sheer, utter madness from the magical mystery tour known as Lamonf.

Don’t bother trying to make sense of it.

Just smile. It’s Gael. At Roland Garros. Getting carried away by the moment, swept away by the passion, the impulse and the desire to bring them to their feet.

Monfils may not have won the point, but with that 10-foot skidmark that took him sliding like a maniac into the barrier, and his wild, visceral, last-ditch dive that provided every tennis fan with something to smile about on Day 5 of the French Open, he won our hearts all over again.

Monfils' 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-1 victory over Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday sets up a mouth-watering match for the ages in the third round against Fabio Fognini. It should be part human highlight film and part psycho thriller, with a little bit of hangtime (hopefully) thrown in.
