Simona Halep Pulls out of Madrid with Abdominal Injury

After completing her three-set, come-from-behind victory over 19-year-old American Madison Keys on Wednesday, world No. 5 Simona Halep has announced her withdrawal from the Internazionali BNL d'Italia due to an abdominal injury.

“I’m very sad I have to withdraw from the tournament, it was impossible to continue the tournament because of a left abdominal injury,” Halep said in a statement. “I have great memories from Rome last year when I reached the semifinal. I will fly home to Bucharest tomorrow and I will have treatment every day. I hope the treatment, together with a few days of rest, will allow me to start practice again next week and I hope I will be ready to play Roland Garros.”

Halep, who was a qualifier ranked No. 64 in the world when she played Rome last year, has since won seven titles and climbed to her current perch as the WTA's No. 5. She was a finalist in Madrid last week, losing out to Maria Sharapova in three sets.
