2011 WTA Newcomer of the Year Irina-Camelia Begu tops the list of seeds in the Roland Garros women's qualifying tournament, where 12 players will advance to play in the main draw at the end of three rounds of qualifying.
In addition to Begu, the top four seeds in women's qualifying include No. 2 Heather Watson, who is coming off a title in Prague; No. 3 seeded Hungarian Timea Babos, who reached two junior Roland Garros doubles finals in 2009 and 2010, and Watson's countrywoman, No. 4 Johanna Konta. Although Watson and Konta entered the top 100 in the rankings this week on the back of strong results on the ITF Circuit, they will have to try their luck in qualifying as their previous rankings were used for entry.
While Begu heads the qualifying draw, the top seed's path is all but easy. Her first round opponent is Misa Eguchi of Japan, but she could face streaking Serbian Aleksandra Krunic in the second round. Serbian Fed Cup stalwart Krunic, who opens against Australian wildcard Storm Sanders, is coming off back-to-back semifinal showings in ITF events in Trnava and Prague and is always a tough competitor. Also in this section of the draw is Japan's Ayumi Morita, who has spent time in the top 50 in the world rankings, clay court specialist Florencia Molinero of Argentina, and No. 20 seed Grace Min. Min, who led the chase for the USTA Roland Garros wildcard, ended up finishing second to Taylor Townsend in the standings.
Watson's first opponent will be American Irina Falconi, and the Brit looks to be a favorite to qualify for the main draw; her toughest test could potentially come in the final round, where she is drawn to play the 23rd seed, Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay. In an all-unseeded match in the top section, new mother Kateryna Bondarenko continues her comeback bid against talented Dutch teenager Indy de Vroome. The winner of the match will advance to face either Babos or another Argentinian, Maria Irigoyen.
Four Americans are housed in the second section of the qualifying draw, anchored by the only seed, No. 17 Victoria Duval. Duval, who charmed the crowd Flushing Meadows with an upset of Samantha Stosur at last year's US Open, opens against Czech Tereza Smitkova. Looming in this section of the draw however, is 16-year-old Croatian wunderkind Ana Konjuh.
The three other Americans in the section are Stanford product Nicole Gibbs, who will face No. 19 Alexandra Panova; Madison Brengle, who will play Poland's Paula Kania, and Sachia Vickery, who's drawn Konta. For clay court purists, the last first round match in this section between No. 15 Lara Arruabarrena and Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru is for you.
Familiar names abound in the bottom half of the women's draw, including No. 11 Michelle Larcher de Brito, No. 13 Andrea Hlavackova, No. 18 Lucie Hradecka, No. 24 Sofia Arvidsson and unseeded Yulia Putintseva, Arantxa Rus and Jarmila Gajdosova. Rus, who upset Kim Cljisters at this tournament in 2011 and reached the fourth round a year later, opens against Lyudmyla Kichenok, twin sister of main draw debutant Nadiya. No. 9 seed and comeback queen Timea Baczinsky also inhabits this section.
Only two Americans are to be found on the bottom half, as Melanie Oudin starts her campaign against home favorite Manon Arcangioli, and Allie Kiick gets Russian Polina Vinogradova.
