Second Serve

By Nick Georgandis

Australia's Sam Groth is not the most famous Australian player named Sam (that would be Sam Stosur), but he blasted his name into the record books this weekend.

The ATP confirmed on Saturday that Groth broke the existing tour record for the fastests serve when he blasted one at 163 miles per hour during a Challenger Tour event in South Korea on Wednesday.

The previous record was held by Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, who also holds the record for being the tallest man (6-feet, 10-inches) to play on tour. Karlovic set the previous record (156 mph) in March of 2011 during the Davis Cup.

In a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Uladzimir Ignatik of Belarus, Groth hit serves clocked at 158, 159 and then 163 mph.
