Juan Martin del Potro has been training in the Sunshine State. Now, he's ready to return to a competitive state at the Miami Open.
The 2009 U.S. Open champion announced he will play next week's Miami Open in a post on his Facebook page.
"Two months ago, I was leaving the Mayo Clinic after my last surgery," del Potro said. "Today I bring you the news: I will play in Miami. With the support of my team and my doctor Richard Berger, I will take another step in the recovery process which, as you know, takes time. It's great this is happening here in Miami, a special tournament for me because of the Latin fans and the Argentinians in particular."
The 26-year-old Argentine underwent what his press rep called "minor surgery" on his left wrist at the at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.in January. His second wrist surgery in the last 12 months forced him out of the Australian Open, Delray Beach and Indian Wells, where he was also entered in the doubles draw with fellow U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic.
The 10th-ranked Cilic, who made his 2015 season debut in Indian Wells last week, has withdrawn from Miami due to a recurrence of the shoulder injury that has plagued him since last season.
Del Potro has been practicing in Florida and says he's eager to return.
Injury-induced inactivity has limited the former world No. 4 to just three matches this season. Del Potro has not played since losing to No. 66 Mikhail Kukushkin, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), in the Sydney quarterfinals in January.
