Matteo Berrettini did everything in his power to deny Taylor Fritz from reaching his first Miami semifinal. In the end it wasn’t enough.

The Italian saved six match points in a dramatic second set to force Fritz to a deciding set, but he was eventually reeled back in by the fourth-ranked American, 7-5 6-7(7) 7-5.

There will be no nightmares tonight for the 27-year-old, who will face Czechia’s Jakub Mensik for a spot in the final on Friday in Miami.

“There’s two options. Get frustrated, lose, and then be even more frustrated about all the chances I blew, or regroup and get the win,” Fritz said. “Now I can sleep tonight and not be so mad at the chances I blew.”

Fritz improves to 5-0 lifetime against Berrettini, thanks to three break conversions, including one for 6-5 in the final set.

The American is into his sixth Masters 1000 semifinal, and he is one of just 12 American men that have reached at least the semifinals at Both Indian Wells and Miami since 1985.
