Bianca Andreescu Suffers Devastating Injury in Miami, Leaves Court in a Wheelchair

By Chris Oddo | @TheFanChild | Monday March 27, 2023

Bianca Andreescu’s 2023 season was just starting to heat up. The former World No.4 has been playing strong tennis during the sunshine double and was battling with Ekaterina Alexandrova in round of 16 action at the Miami Open when disaster struck on Monday night.

Andreescu injured her left lower leg while moving laterally on her baseline and went down on the court in agony. Here’s footage of the moment she went down.

The No.31 seeded Canadian would stay on the court on her back in agony for several minutes, before a wheelchair was brought on the court to take her away.

While down on the court Andreescu told physicians that she had never felt such pain.

It’s a devastating moment for a player who has dealt with more than her share of injuries over the last few years. Andreescu was fresh off her first Top 20 win of the season after battling past No.7-seeded Maria Sakkari in Miami. She also defeated former Grand Slam champions Emma Raducanu and Sofia Kenin to reach the round of 16.

The Canadian was was forced to retire to 18th-seeded Alexandrova trailing 7-6(0), 0-2 RET. Fingers crossed that the injury isn’t too serious.

After winning the US Open in 2019 Andreescu injured her meniscus and would ended missing the entirety of the 2020 season.

In 2021 she dealt with a foot injury that forced her retire from the Miami final, as well as Covid, and mental health issues.
