Groin Injury Knocks Murray Out of Miami

Andy Murray's Miami Open is over before it began.

The former world No. 1 withdrew from Miami today due to a left groin injury.

Navratilova: Murray Has Earned Wild Cards

Two-time Olympic gold-medal champion Murray joins the Big 3 of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in withdrawing. Murray's former mixed doubles partner, Serena Williams, has also pulled out while recovering from oral surgery.

Murray, who was a Miami Heat season ticket holder when he spent offseasons in the city, won the 2009 and 2013 Miami Open championships.

"I had no issues while training, felt fine, did some gym work Friday, no problem. Then I woke up about three in the morning, felt pain in the groin, not on the side I had my surgery," Murray told the Miami Herald. "When I got out of bed I struggled quite a bit to walk. I have no idea what I did, it's one of those freak things.

"Each day it has gotten progressively better, but it's not enough."

The tournament had granted Murray a wild card. His departure leaves John Isner as the only former Miami Open champion in the men's field. Six-time champion Djokovic and Federer, who swept Isner to win his fourth Miami crown in the 2019 final, have combined to capture 10 of the last 15 Miami championships.
