Denis Shapovalov brought the crowd to its feet during his 6-3 6-4 victory over American Steve Johnson on Sunday at the BNP Paribas Open.

After the match he brought many to tears.

Shapovalov paid tribute to a former coach, Bruno Agnostinelli Jr., who passed away suddenly in March of 2016, after he clinched his victory.

After the match the Canadian opened up to reporters about his feelings about his former mentor.

“I think it was yesterday three years ago,” Shapovalov said. “And he's definitely a huge role model of mine. He taught me so many great things. I remember working on my backhand a lot with him. So it's this time of year I always get emotional a little bit with it. And, yeah, honestly I just wish he was around to see how far I have come and how much— you know, I just hope he would have been proud of me.

The emotional Canadian added: I definitely dedicate today to him. You know, it's not a day that goes by that I don't think of him and I don't wish that he was still around us.

Shapovalov advances to the third round for the first time at Indian Wells to face Croatia’s Marin Cilic.
