Muguruza did not drop serve dismissing Lauren Davis, 6-1, 6-3, to power into the second round where she awaits the winner of tonight's blockbuster between former No. 1 players Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka.
While the prospect of former top-ranked, major champions meeting so early in the event may seem weird, the second-round clash carries all the buzz of a final—and Muguruza says that's great for the tournament despite the degree of difficulty it presents.
"I think it's great. I think it's very good match to have," Muguruza told the media in Indian Wells. "That's the matches that I feel are exciting, that I want to play, that it could be any final. It's early. Yeah, I will be watching. Hopefully it's going to be a good match."
Muguruza defeated Serena Williams, 7-5, 6-4, in a brilliant performance to capture her maiden major at the 2016 Roland Garros.
The 37-year-old Serena has won three of five meetings with Muguruza, including both of their hard-court encounters.
Azarenka edged Muguruza, 7-6, 7-6, in their lone meeting at the 2016 Miami Open.
