Second Serve

Nobody will ever accuse Dominic Thiem of not being passionate about Davis Cup. No, not after his epic racquet smash on Friday during the fifth set of his clash with Portugal’s Gastao Elias at the Pavilhao Vitoria Sport Club in Guimarães, Portugal.

After losing a long rally, Thiem goes ballistic on his frame, shattering it in two sessions until it is barely recognizable as a tennis racquet. Thiem would eventually regain his cool and edge out Elias in a fifth-set tiebreaker to give Austria a Day one split.

Afterwards, Thiem admitted to bad behavior but still had a smile on his face after his first Davis Cup win.

Thiem would get his second Davis Cup win on Saturday, as he teamed with Alexander Peya to erase a two set deficit against Elias and Joao Sousa to take the all-important doubles point.
