Second Serve

Ivan Dodig had things under control early in his first-round battle with Germany’s 18-year-old Alexander Zverev, then this happened.

Watch (see video above) as the Croatian takes a spill and subsequently drops his racquet. That would have been fine if it hadn’t been for the ornery racquet, which spiked off the court and thunked Dodig right above the eye.

Dodig would need about seven minutes to get the cut repaired, and he lost control of the match from there.

Zverev went on to claim the 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory for just his second career Masters 1000 win and first at Indian Wells. The world No. 58 will move on to face 23rd-seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the second round. In other early action on Friday at the BNP Paribas Open, Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin defeated Daniel Munoz de la Nava, 7-6(1), 6-2.

Kukuskhin moves on to face 5th-seeded Kei Nishikori in the second round.
