Nicolas Almagro’s first appearance at the BNP Paribas Open since 2013 did not go as planned. But at least he got a workout. Watch the former world No. 9 go ballistic early in the third set of his 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 loss to compatriot Inigo Cervantes. The match was close, but Almagro’s demolition of this frame was an absolute shellacking.

It was a pretty good February for both Spaniards. Almagro reached his first ATP final since 2014 and ended a 15-match losing streak vs. David Ferrer.

Cervantes, playing at a career-high ranking of 59 in the world, reached his first career semifinal in Sao Paulo.

Cervantes will face 12th-seeded Milos Raonic in his next match.

Other winners on a busy Thursday in the desert were Nicolas Mahut, Robin Haase, Leonardo Mayer, Guido Pella, Borna Coric, Andrey Kuznetsov, Ilya Marchenko, Evgeny Donskoy, Federico Delbonis and Marcel Granollers.

Juan Martin del Potro will square off with American Tim Smyczek in the night session.
