Kyrgios Hits as Hewitt a Possibility for Davis Cup

Will he or won’t he?

That's what Australian tennis fans are asking as now both Nick Kyrgios and Lleyton Hewitt find themselves being considered for Australia’s upcoming Davis Cup tie versus the U.S. in Kooyong this weekend.

Kyrgios, who has been suffering with a virus since playing in Dubai, had his first ever practice hit on Wednesday afternoon. Though Kyrgios was officially named to the Aussie team, there is still uncertainty if the recent Marseille winner will actually play.

Enter Hewitt who is officially serving as Australian Davis Cup captain this weekend. Though Hewitt retired from tennis at January's Australian Open, the veteran’s experience may be called upon if Kyrgios is unable to play. The Age posted video of Kyrgios’s practicing on Wednesday.

Australian coach Jason Stoltenberg remained uncertain though if Kyrgios would be healthy in time for the tie.

"We'll have to see now, but he hit really well and he seems good," Stoltenberg said.

Bob Bryan, from the U.S. team, however would not be surprised to see Hewitt suit up at the last minute either for singles or doubles.

"We won't be surprised," Bryan said. "I mean, Lleyton's put in a lot of work this week. Our practice courts are right next to theirs and he's been playing a lot of singles, been playing doubles, so we're gonna be ready for anything. But if he plays for Australia it won't be a bad choice for the Aussies. The guy's a legend and he'll step up just fine."

When asked about Hewitt, Stoltenberg said that at the moment Hewitt is not being considered despite the Wimbledon champion practicing all week.

"Hasn't really come up, but he's been hitting a lot of balls, so he's a thinker, and he thinks ahead and he's pretty organised. So I'd say in his mind he's just covering all his bases."

The Australian team has until 9 a.m. local time on Thursday to submit their list of players to compete starting on Friday.
