Marcos Baghdatis made Davis Cup history on Thursday with his win over Andorra's Jean-Baptiste Poux-Gautier in the Europe Zone Group III event.
The Cypriot has not lost a Davis Cup singles rubber since June of 2003, and passes Bjorn Borg on the all-time list for consecutive wins in Davis Cup with 34.
Baghdatis owns a lifetime record of 45-3 in singles, and 65-13 overall. But Baghdatis' streak, impressive as it is, has featured only matches played in the competition's lower tiers. He has toiled in Group III and Group II for all of his Davis Cup career.
After losing in 1973 to Manuel Orantes, Borg won his final 33 Davis Cup rubbers. Borg led Sweden to the Davis Cup title in 1975. It was the nation’s first of seven titles.
That said, Baghdatis can only beat who is on the other side of the net, and his streak deserves high praise, whether it is as impressive as Borg's Davis Cup accomplishments or not. Congrats, Marcos!
