Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

By Nick Georgandis

You never know what you're going to find on Ebay, and if you type "tennis" into the big search bar in the sky, the results - once you get past eight bazillion pages of tennis bracelets, are often a tremendous blend of amazing and comical.

Item: Courtgear.com domain name
Asking Price: $21 million (or best offer)

Who doesn't want their own website? And who doesn't also want $21 million? This item's been on the market for a while. A history of offers on the domain dates back to November of 2011. Four offers have been declined, the other seven expired.

Item: Photo by Annie Lebowitz of Martina Navratilova grabbing a giant piece of industrial equipment, taken in 1994.
Asking Price: $2,500

I think Martina is the bomb; I rooted hard for her on her overmatched series of Dancing with the Stars, but this is one funky looking photograph. As splendidly strong as her arms are, she looks like she's about to rip off the giant mechanical wheel and throw it at you.

Item: 60' x 120' multi-sport tennis court
Price: $20,000

Sure, you could make the wife happy and buy a new car like you said, but where's the fun in that? Here's a 7,2000 square foot sport court made from high-impact polypropylene. Have fun putting it together. Oh, and the warranty past 30 days is at the cost of40 cents per square foot ... So that's another $2,880. But hey, free shipping!

Item: Antique 1880s A.A.G. Spalding "Windmere" tennis racket
Price: $5,500

Don't buy this thing. Why? Because eventually you're going to try and play with it, and then it's going to break and you're going to feel like a moron. The handle is made of cork, and it looks a bit like the thing Bjorn Borg tried to play with during his horrifying early 1990s comeback, that or the kitchen tool they use to get pizza pies out of the big brick ovens.

Item: One of a kind caricature of Bjorn Borg, autographed
Price: $7,500

Kari Bernhardt, the Texan whom Borg enjoyed a long-term relationship, has decided to celebrate that love by making some serious Dough Ray Me. I'm not sure who did this caricature, but Bjorn probably could have gotten a better one at his local carnival for $5 or 10 tickets. Ms. Bernhardt is also generously offering a Swedish flag hat that Borg "loved to wear" for a mere $4,000.

Item: Limited Edition Nike Zoom Vapor RF 287 (#107 of 287)
Price: $9,999

When Roger Federer won Wimbledon last summer and took back No. 1 for a record 287th straight week, Nike released this special edition shoes and only sold 287 pairs, each for $287. This seller never removed his pair from the box, and now hopes you will help him make a tidy 34,840% profit on the original investment. A word of caution, opening the box cuts the price in half, based on other Ebay listings. Trying them on drops it another 25%.
