Raducanu Out of Birmingham, Optimistic for Wimbledon

Emma Raducanu is optimistic for a Wimbledon return.

The US Open champion withdrew from next week's Birmingham Classic as she continues recovery from a left side injury that forced her to retire from her Nottingham opener after seven games.

The 19-year-old Raducanu told LTA.org she's looking forward to enjoying "the rest of grass season."

“It was disappointing to go out this week with a side injury and unfortunately will no longer be able to play in Birmingham," Raducanu told LTA.org. "I’m looking forward to be back on the match court soon though to enjoy the rest of the grass season.”

Last September, the 18-year-old Raducanu defeated 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez to become the first qualifier—male or female—to win a Grand Slam singles title.

The 150th-ranked teenager was the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles championship since Virginia Wade won the 1977 Wimbledon championship. Wade was on hand for many of Raducanu's matches, including the final.

Raducanu, who has rocketed up the rankings from No. 150 at the US Open to No. 11, has failed to survive the first round in six of 12 tournaments since her Flushing Meadows triumph.
