Canada’s Leylah Fernandez had a best ever performance on the clay at Roland-Garros when she reached her first quarterfinal in Paris. But she won’t be able to repeat the feat at Wimbledon – the 19-year-old has been ruled out due to a stress fracture in the top of her right foot.
Seen on crutches the day after being defeated by Italy’s Martina Trevisan, 2-6, 7-6(3), 3-6, the Canadian soon announced that she would be missing the grass season.
Per TSN, the injury was confirmed to TSN's Mark Masters by Fernandez's father and coach, Jorge. Fernandez hopes to make her return this summer at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. The event takes place from August 1-7
Fernandez has had a solid season, as she backs up her trip to the 2021 US Open final. The Montreal native is 16-8 on the season with a title at Monterrey, Mexico. She rises in this week's rankings to a career-high 15
