Yana Sizikova Detained in RG Match-Fixing Allegation

Bounced from her Roland Garros doubles opener, Yana Sizikova was busted before departing the tournament.

The 26-year-old Russian was detained as she was leaving a massage session following her first-round French Open doubles defeat.

Sizikova was taken into custody for sports corruption and organized gang fraud, French publication Le Parisien reports citing the Paris prosecutor’s office.

Sizikova's arrest was reportedly “very hectic” with some security attempting to block police carrying out the arrest, according to reports from Le Parisien and AFP.

Additionally, a search of the Russian's hotel room was conducted by police as part of an ongoing investigation that dates back to October 1st, French authorities confirmed.

Last fall, French police confirmed launching an investigation into “fraud in an organized group” and “active and passive corruption” in a first-round women’s doubles match at the 2020 French Open.

The Romanian duo of Andreea Mitu and Patricia Maria Tig defeated Sizikova and American Madison Brengle 7-6, 6-4 in that Roland Garros match played on September 30th.

The corruption investigation centers on the fifth game of the second set when Sizikova lost her serve at love.

Betting firms reported an unusually high level of bets placed on Sizikova to lose that single game.

Adding to suspicion, Sizikova double-faulted on the first and last points of the game and seemed to stumble chasing a ball in between as she lost her serve at love. None of the other three players on the court have been publicly cited as part of the investigation.

The Moscow-born Sizikova has earned about $206,000 in career prize money, and reached a career-high doubles ranking of No. 89 last season.
