Nadal: Felt Close to Winning Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal fell flat on his back after defeating Dominic Thiem to successfully defend his Roland Garros title.

Nadal arose alone in tennis history as the only player, male or female, to win the same Slam title 12 times.

One of the 33-year-old Spaniard's most under-appreciated achievements is the fact he's pulled off the rare Roland Garros-Wimbledon title sweep twice: in 2008 and 2010 when he won the last three majors of the season to become the youngest man in Open Era history to complete the career Grand Slam.

Asked about his grass-court plans, Nadal pondered the prospect of pulling off the clay to grass championship sweep again. Nadal who lost an epic Wimbledon semifinal to Novak Djokovic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (9), 6-3, 8-10 last year, said he feels he's been close to a Wimbledon final return in recent years.

"I know I played a great event last year," Nadal said. "I have been able to be very close to win another title there. As everybody knows, I love to play on grass. And as everybody knows, I am not able to play so many weeks in a row like I did ten years ago, eight years ago. So I have to do my schedule.

"Honestly, the last two years that I played in Wimbledon, I felt close again. Even if the first year have been that match against (Gilles) Muller, I played great tennis there too. I was very close to being in the quarterfinals, and last year I was one point away to that final."

The two-time Wimbledon winner is nine years removed from his last triumph at the grass-court Grand Slam.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion narrowed the gap on 20-time Grand Slam king to two majors by virtue of his title run in Paris.

Given cranky knee, advancing age and recent runs at The Championships, Nadal, who played nine tournaments last year, will not play a grass-court tune-up before Wimbledon, which starts on July 1st.

"So I will not play before Wimbledon, of course," Nadal said. "The experience says that having the right preparation then, practicing well, and maybe couple of matches, I don't know, before there. I felt competitive last couple of years, so why I need to change that? What give me better chance is being healthy more than play a lot of matches before."
