McEnroe Tennis Academy Holding Scholarship Tryouts

New York-area juniors can earn a scholarship to the John McEnroe Tennis Academy this weekend.

Sportime Randall's Island and John McEnroe Tennis Academy will host scholarship tryouts for talented and experienced players aged 6-16, as well as a more free-form athletic combine for children ages 6-10 who are new to the game this Saturday, June 15th at Sportime Randall's Island.

Scholarships will be awarded through the Johnny Mac Tennis Project.

Inspired to train young athletes in the New York City Metropolitan area, tennis icon and life-long New Yorker McEnroe believes world-class tennis players can be developed in urban settings, while living at home, pursuing their education and participating in a variety of sports and extracurricular activities.

This philosophy sets the John McEnroe Tennis Academy apart from other training programs, which often require young players to relocate with families making costly moves to be closer to training facilities or sending young players to board at these programs.

Inspired by this vision and comprised of a world-class staff of tennis, athletic training and performance coaches, JMTA delivers a comprehensive training program designed to ensure the best possible outcome for all players, including junior tournament and collegiate players, and those seeking to play on the ATP, WTA and ITF tours.

John McEnroe Tennis Academy Tryouts Saturday, June 15 At Sportime Randall's Island

• JMTA Experienced Player Tryouts: 9:00 am to 12:30 pm (8:00am check-in); Players aged 6-16, with tennis experience. Recreational and competitive youth tennis players will compete for full and partial JMTA scholarships will be awarded for the 2019-2020 training year at either Sportime Randall’s Island and at JMTA’s Westchester satellite location, Sportime Lake Isle.

• JMTP New Player Athletic Combine: 12 pm to 2 pm; Young athletes 6-10 who display promise and passion for learning tennis. Participants will engage in activities designed by coaches to assess tennis-applicable skills. Scholarships will be awarded for weekly fall 2019 JMTA beginners program at Sportime Randall’s Island.

In 2010, Hall of Famer McEnroe and Sportime partnered to launch the John McEnroe Tennis Academy in John’s hometown of New York City, located at Sportime's flagship Randall's Island Tennis Center in Manhattan.

By 2012, JMTA had expanded to Sportime locations in Eastchester, Westchester and to its high-performance training Center in Syosset, Long Island.

The Johnny Mac Tennis Project (JMTP) changes young lives by removing the economic and social barriers to success through tennis. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, JMTP introduces the sport of tennis as a life-long health, fitness and social activity to thousands of under-resourced New York City area kids, particularly those living in East Harlem and the South Bronx, two communities adjacent to the JMTP program at Sportime Randall’s Island.
