Juan Martin del Potro has undergone surgery to his right patella. The operation happened over the weekend in Barcelona.
"Surgery went well," Del Potro wrote. "Now entering rehab mode."
The Argentine originally injured the knee last October in Shanghai during a round of 16 match with Borna Coric at the Shanghai Masters. He missed four months, making his return at Delray Beach this February, where he played three matches. Del Potro then sat out until May, avoiding surgery and instead undergoing treatment and advice from Dr. Angel Ruiz Cotorro, before returning to action in Madrid.
He played three events on the clay, Reaching the quarter-finals at Rome and the round of 16 at Roland Garros.
The 30-year-old re-injured the knee last week in London at the Fever-Tree Championships at Queen’s Club. He slipped and stumbled dangerously on the grass during his 7-5 6-4 victory over Denis Shapovalov in the first round.
After withdrawing from the tournament, Del Potro told media in a June 21 Instagram post that he isn’t sure if he has played his last match.
The 2009 U.S. Open champion has also undergone four wrist surgeries and his trials and tribulations have been well documented. He missed nearly all of 2010 after a surgery to his right wrist in May of 2010. Then, in 2014 and 2015, he underwent three wrist surgeries in a one-year span and was limited to just 14 matches.
Del Potro returned to the tour full-time in 2016 and reached a career-high ranking of No.3 last August while also reaching the U.S. Open final.
