Latvia’s first ever Grand Slam champion got a very warm reception upon her arrival back to Riga, Latvia. Jelena Ostapenko had the red carpet rolled out for her as she deplaned to meet fans. There were flowers, there were autographs from adorable children and there was a commemorative press conference.

Then… more autographs.

The 20-year-old is the first unseeded woman to win Roland Garros since 1933.

In other words: She’s a hero and an instant star.

"All of the country watched the final, including thousands on the big screen next to the Freedom Monument in the center of Riga," Latvian ambassador Baiba Braze told CNN Sport. "Jelena Ostapenko is a symbol of the Latvian people."
