Evans said his cocaine use was recreational rather than performance-enhancing.

"This is a very difficult day for me and I wanted to come here in person and tell you face-to-face I was notified a few days ago that I failed a drugs test in April, where I tested positive for cocaine," Evans told the media in a brief London press conference. "It is really important that you know this was taken out of competition and the context completely unrelated to tennis. I made a mistake and I must face up to it."

The International Tennis Federation announced Evans was formally charged with an anti-doping rule violation on June 16th had accepted his positive test. Evans will be provisionally suspended from June 26th pending determination of his case.

"I do not condone for one second to anyone that this was acceptable behavior," Evans said. "I have let a lot of people down – my family, my coach, my team, sponsors, British tennis and my fans. I can only deeply apologise from the bottom of my heart. It is a sad and humbling experience. I hope you understand I will not be taking any questions and I thank you for your support of my career to date."

The 50th-ranked Evans failed a drug test at the Barcelona Open where he reached the round of 16 before bowing to Dominic Thiem, 7-6 (5), 6-2.

"(Evans') sample was analyzed by a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory in Montreal, Canada, and was found to contain cocaine and its metabolite," the International Tennis Federation said in a statement. "Cocaine is a non-specified substance prohibited under category S6 of the 2017 WADA Prohibited List (stimulants), and therefore is also prohibited under the TADP."

The 27-year-old Evans has not played a match since retiring from the Aegon Surbiton Trophy quarterfinals with a left leg injury while leading Dustin Brown.

Former world No. 1 Martina Hingis served a two-year ban after testing positive for cocaine though Hingis has always maintained she did not knowingly ingest the drug.
