Spain's David Ferrer announced his withdrawal from Wimbledon due to an elbow injury. The No. 8 seed posted this message on Twitter in Spanish saying he was unable to compete.
WIth Ferrer pulling out, that meant that lucky loser Luca Vanni of Italy would take Ferrer's place in the draw. Vanni will now face UK wildcard James Ward in the first round.
Per Stuart Fraser of the Daily Mail Online, if Ferrer had made his announcement earlier, it might have changed the draw for defending champion Novak Djokovic.
The absence of Ferrer, a two-time quarterfinalist at the event, opens up things for fellow Spaniard and No. 10 seed Rafael Nadal. The two-time Wimbledon champion was projected to possibly play Ferrer in the fourth round.
Opening round play at the third major of the year starts on Monday.
