As Chris Fowler of ESPN said: “It was the battle during the war.”
He was, of course, referring to the marathon 26-minute, 53-second game midway through the third set in Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
It was a game that featured everything including incredible shot making from both men, momentum swings, and an extended conversation between Djokovic and chair umpire Fergus Murphy over the serve shot clock not working properly.
Ultimately, Alcaraz, after 13 deuces, and after seven break point chances, finally broke Djokovic to extend his lead to a double break for 4-1.
Alcaraz eventually took the pivotal third set and soon the match to win his first ever Wimbledon title 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
Here’s some Twitter reactions to that crazy long - and memorable - game.
