16-year-old Liv Hovde has become the 14th American to win the Wimbledon girls singles title.
Hove, a Texas native who trains at the Dent Academy with Aussie legend Phil Dent, took out Hungary’s Luca Udvardy, 6-3, 6-4, on No.1 Court on Saturday, just as the women’s final was getting underway. She also received congratulations from six-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic.
How did she feel about that?
“He was really nice,” she said. “He asked me, like, how I felt. He's a really nice guy, so it was really cool. Then we took a photo together, so it was really cool.”
The top-seeded American hit 13 winners against 30 unforced errors and broke serve in six of her nine return games against Udvardy.
“There were a lot of people, so it was very nerve-wracking at the beginning, but then I just focused on myself, and it got better throughout the match,” Hovde said.
Hovde only dropped one set during the tournament and defeated three seeded players.
Angella Okutoyi and Rose Marie Nijkamp won the doubles crown, defeating Canada’s Kayla Cross and Victoria Mboko. Okutoyi became Kenya’s first Wimbledon champion with her triumph.
